Welcome to Grapevine Studio!

Welcome to Grapevine Studio.  I’m Mary Maupin, and Grapevine is the name of the community where I live, in the mountains of Madison County, N.C.  Grapevine Studio is where I produce the small (9” x 11”) mixed-media pieces you can see posted below. I attach a print of one of my paintings or of a photo I’ve taken to the back of a 1½”deep box, and then embellish it with bits of fabric, colored pen drawing, threads, and sometimes small pieces of glass. The frame is fabric applied to the edges of the box. These pieces are not meant to be used as boxes but rather as decorative pieces to be hung on a wall. Scroll down to see images of my work.

Between the Hills and the River

This mixed media piece is 18″ x 32″, and shows the town of Marshall, N.C.  I took this photo of Marshall, printed it and glued it onto a box (2″ deep), and spent countless fun and obsessive hours applying bits of fabric to the image.  This piece is at FLOW Gallery (the building with the red front) in Marshall.
